eam Bianchi Countervail's Stephane Tempier grazed victory in XCO World Cup round 2, placing second with Methanol CV in Albstadt (Germany) on Sunday, May 20th. The Frenchman got to the finish line with a 16-second gap from Nino Schurter, ahead of Mathieu Van der Poel, equalling his career best in the XCO World Cup: in 2017 Tempier had placed second in Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada), Val di Sole (Italy) and the GC. Eighth placed in the XCC race, Marco Aurelio Fontana was 13th in the XCO event with a 3:42 gap from the winner. Unlucky Nadir Colledani was forced to withdrawal.
In the early race Tempier was part of the chasing group behind Mathias Flückiger. When the Swissman was slowed by a puncture, a five-man group including Maxime Marotte, Jordan Sarrou, Nino Schurter, Stephane Tempier and Mathieu Van der Poel took the race lead. Tempier was then the only rider able to keep Schurter's pace, before the latter soloed to win: Team Bianchi Countervail's Frenchman finished the race in 1:28:23. Mathieu Van der Poel was third (+40).
"It was really a great race. I rode at my pace without any risks. I lost some seconds in the early race, then I managed to come back at the right moment to break away with Schurter. I was fast in the descents thanks to my Methanol CV, but in the late race I was feeling a little tired. I'll try to better understand how to manage the effort after the introduction of the short track race on Friday" Tempier commented.
Tempier moved up to sixth in the GC with 305 points, Fontana is 15th with 179, Colledani stands at 35. Thanks to the results taken in both the XCC and XCO race, Team Bianchi Countervail was fourth in the Teams classification in Albstadt (101), not far from the podium, also climbing to fourth in the Teams' GC.
Team Bianchi Countervail's good day in Albstadt had started with Chiara Teocchi brilliant performance in the Women's Under 23 race: the Italian was fourth with a 4:46 gap from winner Sina Frei, less than a minute away from the third position. "I'm satisfied but not totally happy with my result. The race was demanding, due to the muddy course, but I performed well, above all in the technical stretches. I would have preferred to finish in the top-3 of my series, I'll try to do it next time". Teocchi said.
Bianchi supplies the team with two high end carbon models with racing geometry: the revolutionary Methanol CV and Methanol 29.1 FS (full suspension).
